Project: The Cleaner Seas Project
State: QLD
Services: Independent Estimating Services
Project Cost: AUD$188m
Date: 2006
The Project
As part of its obligations to meet the requirements of the State Governments Coastal Management Plan, Cairns City Council initiated the Cleaner Seas Initiative with a view to undertaking major upgrades at four major wastewater treatment plants over the past three years. The Northern, Southern, Edmonton and Marlin Coast wastewater treatment plants will increase both capacity and biological nutrient removal processes to ensure the cleanest possible outfall from the sewerage released into the ocean.
Our Involvement
The Aquenta Consulting team provided independent estimating services for Cairns City Council on four wastewater treatment plants. Working closely with design and engineering consultants, we were able to ensure budget costs were as accurate as possible at that stage of design and reflected the proposed processes.
The Outcome
The project was delivered on time and on budget, delivering upgrades to the Edmonton, Marlin Coast, Southern and Northern waste water treatement plants. The upgrades involved the installation of state-of-the-art submerged membrane filter technology. These filters cut the amount of nitrogen, phosphorous and ammonia being discharged onto the reef by around 80 per cent annually.
