Goonyella to Abbot Point (GAP) Expansion Project

The project to connect the Goonyella and Newlands Coal rail systems was one of the largest railway projects undertaken in the history of Queensland. This massive project delivered the new 69km Northern Missing Link rail corridor and an upgrade to the existing Newlands rail system – doubling the volume of coal that can be railed to the Port of Abbot Point for export to 50 Mtpa.

Our involvement

Aquenta performed a series of roles over the duration of the GAP Expansion Project. Initially engaged as Independent Estimator for the original scheme, our role was extended to provide budget estimates for various capacity options considered, set up the financial framework and agree target costs for the revised project, and subsequent cost engineering and project controls services.

Cost Estimating, Cost Engineering & Project Controls.

The outcome

Setting up a robust cost report system early in the project to align client reporting structures paid dividends throughout the project life cycle, and allowed for well documented cash flow forecasts and cost to complete calculations during the construction phase. Our involvement in the project from initial concept design stage to financial close ensured both consistent information transfer and minimised loss of knowledge.

The project was successfully completed on time and under budget in 2013.
